CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. – Two Clarendon County men – including a sitting school board member – have been charged with five counts of Petit Larceny for allegedly stealing campaign yard signs.

Robert Marcellus Fleming and Richard A. Canady were charged in connection to stealing political signs in nearby Williamsburg County, the Kingstree News reports.

Fleming currently serves as a Clarendon County District 2 school board member.

According to a Greeleyville police report, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man driving a black Lincoln Continental picking up campaign signs in the Greeleyville area.

After locating the vehicle, officers reportedly observed a “vehicle of the same description parked on the wrong side of the road on C.E. Murray Blvd. and Fleming allegedly placing a sign into the trunk of the car,” according to the paper.

Police approached the vehicle and Fleming produced a driver’s license, a parole identification card and badge. At that point, the school board member reportedly identified himself as a parole officer for the city of Manning.

That apparently is not the case, as Fleming was arrested for impersonating an officer and also charged with five counts of Petit Larceny for the yard signs allegedly in the back of his car.

Canady, his passenger, was charged with five counts of Petit Larceny.

“Petit larceny” is similar to petty larceny and is defined as “the stealing of another’s personal property—in which the value of the property taken is generally less than $50.

The paper reports the value of the campaign materials is approximately $2,000.

Petit Larceny is a misdemeanor and carries a fine of not more than $1,000, or imprisonment not more than 30 days, according to South Carolina law.

All told, police seized “dozens” of signs.

So far, the school district has not responded to the charges.

Fleming’s term expires in 2017, according to the school district website.
