CONYERS, Ga. – A gunshot fired at a Georgia middle school has convinced officials to ban backpacks on school grounds for the remainder of the school year.

Conyers Middle School was placed on lockdown around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday after a student accidentally fired a .40 caliber, semi-automatic gun in the school bathroom. The weapon was recovered with injury and the eighth grade student, who brought his father’s gun to school, was charged with possession of a firearm by a minor, WSBTV reports.

Police lifted the lockdown around 2:30 p.m., and students returned to school Wednesday under temporary preventative measures that prohibit them from carrying book bags into school buildings.

“Rockdale County Public Schools said they are taking extra security measures for the remainder of the school year,” WSBTV reports. “Book bags are no longer allowed, and any that are brought to school will be searched by school officials.”

My Fox Atlanta reports there will also be a heightened security presence at the middle school, particularly between “school transition periods.”

At least one parent is grateful for the ban on backpacks.

“It’s a good idea, excellent,” parent Juana Rivera told WSBTV.

Others believe district officials should look into metal detectors.

“It would seem that would be necessary,” parent Stanley Laugure said.

District officials told the media the school’s emergency plan went smoothly during the lockdown, but they plan to review school security anyway.

Conyers parent Stephanie Mitchell told My Fox Atlanta she thinks that’s a good idea.

“I believe there needs to be some type of better security,” Mitchell said. “I hate to say that, because school is supposed to be a safe environment.”

Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett said charges against the parents of the student who fired the gun at school are not expected to face criminal charges, “but that could change.”

He also disagreed that metal detectors are necessary to keep students safe.

“I don’t believe that it is necessary here at Rockdale County Schools, but that is a fall for the school system to make,” he told WSBTV.

Many folks who commented on the story online also thought the backpack ban is silly.

“I know how they can make the students completely safe,” Jerry Lee Porter posted to Facebook. “Ban students from schools”

“Yup, that’s how you solve the problem. Make students carry all their books,” Erica Jones wrote. “That’ll show them.”

“This just in … a student was poked with a pencil,” Richard Jackson joked. “School officials are banning all pencils and pencil boxes.”

Jason Clark simply quoted the great Ronald Reagan.

“We must reject the idea that every time a law’s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.”
