ATLANTA – A lapse in school security resulted in a student’s sensitive personal information being posted on Instagram.

WSB reports Maisha Harris received an apology and an explanation after her daughter’s files, including Social Security number and home address were posted on the social media site.

“It shows schools, name, her last year’s grade,” Harris says.

The mother showed numerous documents to the news station.

“This one shows multiple files, not just my student’s files,” she says.

The principal of Frederick Douglass High School reportedly apologized and explained a storage room had been converted to a computer lab and apparently was never cleaned out. Someone had accessed the storage boxes, snapped photos and posted them on the internet.

“The previous academy leader left the files in an unsecured file cabinet in the room. … Necessary steps have been taken to ensure that files are appropriately secured,” the principal wrote in an email to the parent.

Harris says she contacted Instagram and the photos were removed, but the damage may already be done.

“It was taken down; however, it was already out there. I don’t know how long or how many people out there saw her information,” she says.

The principal added the files would be shredded and they should have been before.

So far, the Atlanta school district administration has not responded to the situation.
