ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Orange County school board opened the door for a local church to distribute Bibles and other religious materials to students, and now a Satanic cult is trying to waltz right in.

The Satanic Temple announced this week it plans to hand out pamphlets and other materials to students in the district after school board allowed Bibles to be distributed to students, but not atheist propaganda, according to media reports.

The Central Florida Freethought Community sued Orange County Public Schools over the right to distribute its materials after the school board approved a local Christian group to give away bibles last year. The district eventually relented, and permitted atheist materials – including “An X-Rated Book: Sex & Obscenity in the Bible” – and the lawsuit was dropped in July, the Orlando Sun-Sentinel reports.

Now The Satanic Temple wants to hand out its religious materials to Orange County students, as well, according to a recent press release.

“We would never seek to establish a precedent of disseminating our religious materials in public schools because we believe our constitutional values are better served by respecting a strong separation of Church and State,” Lucien Greaves, The Satanic Temple’s spokeswoman, said in the release.

“However, if a public school board is going to allow religious pamphlets and full Bibles to be distributed to students – as in the case in Orange County, Florida – we think the responsible thing to do is to ensure that these students are given access to a variety of differing religious opinions, as opposed to standing idly by while one religious voice dominates the discourse and delivers propaganda to youth.”

“They have no ability to keep out the Satanists and the literature they want to distribute unless they close the forum altogether,” Andrew Seidel, attorney for The Freedom From Religion Foundation – Central Florida Freethought Community’s parent organization, told the Sun-Sentinel.

The Blaze reports that one of the books The Satanic Temple plans to hand out to students is a coloring and activity book titled “The Satanic Children’s Book of Activities.” The activity book asks students to help characters demonstrate a Satanic ritual, create a connect-the-dots pentagram, includes a word search with terms like “friends,” “love,” “care,” and “acceptance,” among other activities.

“Even as we prefer public policies respecting secularism, we feel that opportunities – such as this – to establish an equal voice for contrasting religious opinions in the public square, tend to favor marginalized, lesser-known, and alternative religions,” Greaves said.

“I am quite certain that all of the children in these Florida schools are already aware of the Christian religion and it’s Bible, and this might be the first exposure these children have to the actual practice of Satanism. We think many students will be very curious to see what we offer.”

According to the press release, The Satanic Temple’s claim to fame is its efforts to erect a Satanic monument next to one honoring the 10 Commandments in the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Most, if not all, who posted comments about the story online were clearly disturbed by the news.

“I usually don’t care what other people want to believe in or not, but pushing Satan on children, for your own twisted agenda? Disgusting!” SillyGoose posted to The Blaze. “Satan himself has a nice warm spot waiting for you.”

“Does anyone else see the irony in the fact that atheists are teaming up with Satanists?” questioned The Blaze poster Sgt.Cookies. “I don’t know whether to laugh at them or cry for them. I just hope I’m present when it is their turn to try to explain this to God at Judgment Day.”
