SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco police are investigating a “vandalism” incident at the French American International School – an Islamic symbol spray painted on a wall in the school’s playground.

Initial news reports described the “pro-ISIS graffiti” which appeared Tuesday morning as an image of the ISIS flag, but officials now contend it’s the symbol of the 5 Percent Nation, a faction of the Nation of Islam, NBC Bay Area reports.

“I don’t know what the message is, but we are investigating a vandalism,” San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Albie Esparza told the news site.

Police also told KRON 4 the incident is not a threat, but an act of vandalism.

“The SFPD Special Investigation Division is actively investigating this incident to determine if it amounts to a hate crime,” a police spokesman told the site. “The graffiti does not appear to be related to ISIS, or any of the activities that occurred over in Europe over the past week.”

The French American International School serves 1,080 students, from pre-K to 12^th grade, and about 23 percent are French nationals. Tuesday’s vandalism comes less than a week after ISIS terrorists killed more than 100 people in Paris in attacks across the city.

In San Francisco, police recovered a can of spray paint at the scene and are reviewing it along with surveillance video in hopes of nabbing those responsible.

The spray-painted symbol included the Islamic crest and an eight-point star above the number seven.

The Five-Percent Nation was founded by Nation of Islam member Clarence 13X (also known as Clarence Edward Smith or “Allah the Father”) after a dispute with the leaders of the Nation of Islam over the identity of God.

Clarence 13X, a student of Malcom X, preached that the black man symbolizes God personified.

“Members of the group call themselves Allah’s Five Percenters, which reflects the concept that 10 percent of the people in the world know the truth of existence, and those elites and agents opt to keep 85 percent of the world in ignorance and under their controlling thumb; the remaining five percent are those who know the truth and are determined to enlighten the rest,” according to Wikipedia.

“We get graffiti from time to time, but the symbol – particularly in light of what happened last week – did awaken some concern, which is why we reported it,” French American International School spokesman Robert Movradinov told the San Francisco Examiner.

School officials told ABC 7 police have also called in the FBI to help investigate the case.

They also sent a message out to parents Tuesday afternoon, according to SFist.com.

“We write to bring you up to date about a concern on campus. This morning our staff noticed graffiti in the Hickory Yard, which we immediately reported to the San Francisco Police Department. SFPD school liaison officers referred it to the Special Investigation Department who investigated its origin in light of recent events in Paris,” the statement read.

“A premature local media report falsely identified the vandalism as ‘ISIS graffiti.’ Law enforcement has assured us that this is not the case and has advised us to resume normal operating procedures as quickly as possible. Students at the 150 Oak campus had been kept inside during the police investigation as a precaution and to facilitate the investigation,” it continued.

Students and parents who spoke with the media seemed mostly unconcerned about the incident.

“I’m not sure what the meaning is towards the graffiti, but I know that we aren’t in danger,” student Margo Resnik told ABC 7. “I think that the school can handle it.”

A parent told KRON 4 essentially the same thing.

“It doesn’t really worry me in terms of the students being safe or not safe,” she said. “I think it’s sad, and I don’t want the kids to be nervous. I think somebody did that to fuel anxiety.”
