WASHINGTON, D.C. – You don’t suppose Mitt Romney follows EAGnews.org, do you?

Yesterday we published a piece about Romney and President Obama carefully avoiding any talk about education reform on the campaign trail. In Romney’s case, we noted that many of his fellow Republicans don’t consider public education a federal issue, and don’t want their presidential candidate nosing in on the business of state and local governments.

We urged Romney to champion the cause of school reform anyway, even if most of the action occurs in state capitols around the nation.

Now we’ve learned that Romney blasted Obama yesterday for his efforts to kill the D.C. Voucher Scholarship Program. By addressing that issue, Romney not only found an excellent reform program to defend, but managed to establish a federal link, since Congress funds the District of Columbia’s education system.

The voucher program allows thousands of underprivileged children in the nation’s capital to escape from failing traditional schools and attend excellent private schools – the same type of schools that Obama’s daughters currently attend.

The President has tried to defund the program in the past, due to pressure from his allies in the national teachers unions. Republicans managed to restore funding for awhile, but there are no dollars earmarked for the voucher program in Obama’s recently-submitted 2013 budget, according to the Washington Times.

Good for Romney for taking a stand on a very important issue. We hope he publicly asks the President why all children should not have the ability to attend the same type of schools as his daughters, regardless of their family income.
