RICHMOND, Va. – Government transparency is better late than never, we suppose.

In 2012 EAGnews did a thorough investigation of the Richmond school district’s check register and clearly determined that a lot of money was being wasted.

Now, lo and behold, the city’s top administrator has conducted a similar investigation and determined that “the system wasted money,” according to a news report from WTVR.com.

School board member Glen Sturtevant said the board “is looking” to post the district’s complete check register online, so citizens can view every transaction the district makes.

We have no idea if that’s a done deal, or if the full board still must approve the policy.

“Folks (in the district) will know that there are plenty of watchdogs … who will look and see when money is not being spent wisely,” Sturtevant was quoted as saying

If the watchdogs had taken a look at the checks written in fiscal year 2010, they would have gotten an eyeful.

The EAGnews report revealed that the district spent a whopping $448,997 at hotels around the nation in 2010-11. It also dropped $135,761 on a travel agency, $92,574 at various restaurants, $53,602 at some sort of coffee establishment, $29,276 at an aquarium and $50,750 at the Richmond Ballet.

The report prompted several Richmond television stations to conduct investigations of their own.
