PHILADELPHIA – The “human catastrophe” taking place in the City of Brotherly Love is directly attributable to America’s money-eating war machine, according to a collection of radicals, malcontents and burned-out hippies known as The Delaware Valley New Priorities Network.

Not surprisingly, the Philadelphia City Council agrees with the freaks.

By a vote of 15-2, the council passed a resolution Thursday – written by the DVNPN – calling on Congress “to bring all U.S. troops home from Afghanistan, to take the funds saved by that action and by significantly cutting the Pentagon budget, and to use that money to fund education, public and private sector family-sustaining job creation, special protections for military sector workers, environmental and infrastructure restoration, care for veterans and their families, and human services that our cities so desperately need.”

What? No demands for paid month-long vacations and new cars for everyone in the 99 percent? No wonder two members voted against this resolution!

“The resolution contrasts the $2 billion shortfall the City of Philadelphia (faces) over the next five years with the $5 billion spent on wars by Philadelphians since 2001,” reports WarIsACrime.org. “The resolution notes the doubling of the military spending in the last decade and that the U.S. military budget could be cut by 80% and still by the largest in the world.”

By focusing on U.S. military spending, council members are hoping to divert attention from financial mismanagement within the city.

We can start with the city school district, which would be one beneficiary of redirected military dollars under the hippie plan. A recently released EAGnews.org report chronicles the waste and graft in the city’s school budget.

For instance, the School District of Philadelphia paid out $15.3 million in “severance pay” to departing teachers and other union members during the 2010-11school year. Taxpayers also shelled out $165 million in health insurance premiums for employees covered by the teachers union contract, while union members only contributed a combined total of $270,550.

Taxpayers were even forced to spend $2.6 million for union employees’ personal legal costs!

Instead of focusing on practical ways to save money and control costs within their own budgets, council members chose to hide behind a pie-in-the-sky resolution that will not improve the city’s financial situation in the least. It was simply a way for council members to keep taxpayers from noticing how miserably public money is handled in the City of Brotherly Love.
