MEMPHIS – Shelby County School leaders aren’t sharing many details about an incident that allegedly happened a week ago involving a teacher and a small child.

News Channel 3 reports a teacher has been suspended for punching a 5-year-old girl.

The Memphis Police Department received word Tuesday, though the supposedly happened last week.

The school district released a statement saying, “The District is investigating these allegations, and the teacher has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The district refused to identify the teacher. If an assault indeed occurred, that’s the place of the police to investigate, not a school district that is seeking to maintain its reputation.

One parent told the news station she plans to “follow up with her children’s teacher” to make sure they are safe.
