OKOBOJI, Iowa – An Iowa high school teacher faces a public intoxication charge after police said he was busted at twice the legal limit to drive at Boji Bay Fun House & Event Center, where he was chaperoning the prom.

Royce Van Roekel, a business education teacher and cross country coach at Okoboji High School, was arrested at the Fun House Saturday night after he failed field sobriety tests, and registered a blood-alcohol level of .191, KTIV reports.

“They don’t want (students) coming to the prom drunk or with drugs on them, so why would the teacher be allowed to, you know,” parent Stacy Lockey told the news site.

“He has to admit to his actions and pay the consequences like anybody else would,” she said, “rightfully so.”

Van Roekel, 33, seems to be doing exactly that.

He pleaded guilty Monday to a public intoxication charge and agree to pay court costs and fines totaling $225. Van Roekel also resigned his teaching position shortly after the incident, the Sioux City Journal reports.

“At a special meeting Tuesday, the Okoboji school board accepted Van Roekel’s resignation effective June 1,” according to the news site. “Superintendent Gary Janssen said Van Roekel will be suspended for the rest of the current school year and will be required to pay the cost of a substitute teacher.”

Janssen would not discuss the situation with KTIV.

“It is a personal matter that they were handling … administratively and are doing what’s best for the students,” he said.

Folks who commented about Van Roekel’s situation online had little to say.

“How sad,” Nichole Scott wrote.

“He should have been fired,” Dale Alexander added.

“What a loser!” Barb Jerome Schacherer posted.
