PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Three Pittsburgh high school teachers face criminal charges stemming from two alleged sex assaults on students at Plum Senior High School.

Plum teacher Drew Zoldak was arrested at school Wednesday and charged with two counts of intimidating a witness after he allegedly outed a student who claims to have been sexually assaulted by his colleague, fellow Plum teacher Joseph Ruggieri, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Plum superintendent Timothy Glasspool told the news site he learned of the allegations against Zoldak Wednesday morning, and placed the teacher on a paid suspension.

Police allege Zoldak told students “the reason I wasn’t here on Friday is because two men in suits from the District Attorney’s Office were asking me hundreds of questions,” and when a student asked him why he pointed at Ruggieri’s alleged victim and said, “Because of her,” the Post-Gazette reports.

“Police said Zoldak then taunted the female student, wanting to know if she was OK with next week’s topic: sexual assault,” WPXI reports.

“The charges against Zoldak are of great concern to the (Allegany County) District Attorney’s Office, because at the very least, they involve conduct which is extraordinarily insensitive to the rights of a child victim by a person who, by virtue of his profession, is obligated to protect that child, and at worst, it is an intentional effort to use this child’s peers and the school setting to make her uncomfortable and keep her from speaking freely about her victimization,” Mike Manko, spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office, told the news site.

Ruggieri, 40, is one of two teachers at Plum Senior High School currently facing charges for inappropriate sexual relationships with students. Police believe he has sex with an underage female student multiple times before Christmas. Ruggieri was initially charged with institutional sexual assault and corruption of minors, but investigators also added a charge of witness intimidation after they contend he attempted to contact the alleged victim.

Ruggieri, the former vice president of the local Plum Borough Education Association, also received some assistance from David Gray, who took over his post at the union. Gray sent an email to union members offering to direct them to an attorney if they don’t feel comfortable talking to police about the investigation, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The message was sent out by the PBEA without authorization from its parent union, the Pennsylvania State Education Association.

During interviews with investigators, Zoldak “implied to the detectives that the victim was partly responsible for the offense, stating: ‘it takes two to tango,’” according to the criminal complaint cited by the Post-Gazette.

The other teacher facing charges, Plum science teacher Jason Cooper, is also charged with institutional sexual assault, corruption of minors, and witness intimidation.

Police allege Cooper had sex with a student after she turned 18 years old, but had groomed her for years beforehand. The alleged victim told police she met Cooper as a student in his class two years ago and spent her stull hall periods with him, but didn’t engage in any hanky-panky until after she turned 18, the Post-Gazette reports.

“She testified that Mr. Cooper kissed her and had consensual sex with her after she turned 18 this year. On one occasion, she said, he gave her a Long Island ice tea,” according to the news site.

The alleged victim also told police Cooper called her to see how she was doing, which prompted the witness intimidation charge.

Cooper’s defense attorney is arguing the relationship wasn’t right, but it wasn’t illegal, either.

Assistant district attorney Evan Lowry, on the other hand, argues the relationship “didn’t happen overnight” and that “the case started when he started grooming her,” the Post-Gazette reports.
