GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio – Two Ohio high school football teams recorded a loss last week after fights in the stands and on the field forced officials to cancel the game.

At least one person was hospitalized for injuries related to several fights that broke out in the stands and on the field during the third quarter of last Friday’s high school football game between Garfield Heights and Collinwood, WKYC.com reports.

Five people were arrested, although two were later released, according to media reports.

“Specifically, an incident broke out in the stands and was followed by an altercation between opposing teams on the field,” according to a Garfield Heights City Schools statement posted to the district’s website.

“Because of the safety and security of every person who attends co-curricular activities at the Garfield Heights City Schools is the utmost importance, district officials, game officials and security personnel made the decision to cancel the game instantaneously.

“Local officials took appropriate actions, and the community can rest assured knowing that those students of the Garfield Heights City Schools who were involved will be swiftly and appropriately dealt with by the district,” the statement read.

The new site reports that game officials issued both teams a loss for the night.

The Garfield Heights Bulldogs were leading the Collinwood Railroaders 26-6 during the season opener at home when officials called the game over safety concerns, Cleveland.com reports.

“I’m just so disappointed,” Garfield Heights coach Chuck Reisland told the news site.

One player was injured during the game, but it wasn’t related to the fighting, according to media reports.

The incident was captured on video and posted to YouTube, where the footage has garnered well over 162,000 views in a few short days.

Numerous commenters on the Cleveland.com report didn’t seem the least bit surprised by the incident, and suggested the district consider rescheduling future games to mid-day Saturday to avoid similar conflicts.

“This is really too much,” OldRuss posted. “I think the CMSD has only day games, and that is what should be the result of this melee. As for the particular individuals involved, fans or players, let the local police sort them out, and charge them; and the schools need to ban them from all future games.”

Poster Dallafatoria suggested more drastic measures.

“Collinwood and Garfield Heights? Not surprised.

“Taxpayers that fund the schools should demand that all games are canceled for the season because of the fight on the field. For the two fights in the stands, that’s simple. No more spectators at games. End of discussion.

“The only surprise here is that no one fired a gun.”
