TRUMBULL, Conn. – A Connecticut middle school teacher was suspended this week after police found him in a parked vehicle, allegedly engaged in sexual activities with a 14-year-old male student.

Timothy Leonard, 37, was charged with risk of injury to a minor and sexual assault in the fourth degree after police allegedly found him in a secluded area of a cinema parking lot with a 14-year-old boy around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Wilton Bulletin reports.

“This news comes as incredible shock to our entire school community. Dr. Leonard has worked in Wilton for many years and had developed a very positive reputation as a teacher,” Wilton Public Schools superintendent Kevin Smith said in a statement.

“If these allegations are true, Dr. Leonard violated the trust of all in the Wilton Public Schools and throughout our community.”

Police allege Leonard, a middle school teacher at Middlebrook School and adjunct professor at Sacred Heart University, when police approached the vehicle, and said he was unaware that the victim was only 14, according to the news site.

Leonard allegedly told police he’s typically attracted to college men – “that’s my thing,” he said, according to police.

The two told officers they met through the online dating app Grinder, and the minor initially lied to police about his age.

“The passenger initially stated he was 18,” police said, according to the Wilton Bulletin, “however he appeared much younger and it was later determined that he was a 14-year-old Trumbull resident.”

Officers contend the two admitted to being sexually intimate, ABC 7 reports.

“Officials at Sacred Heart University said Leonard, a part-time adjunct instructor of graduate students, was suspended immediately,” according to the news station.

Leonard taught at Middlebrook School from 1999 through 2006, then as assistant principal at Somers Middle school until 2010, when he returned to teach at Middlebrook.

The teacher was arrested and released on a $10,000 bond.

The Wilton Bulletin reports Leonard is the second district educator to be arrested for sex-related offenses in the last year.

“Eric Von Kohorn, a preschool paraprofessional, was arrested in August for possession of child pornography,” according to the news site.

Von Kohorn’s arrest was the result of a months-long multi-agency computer crimes task force investigation. Police searched Von Kohorn’s home and seized a laptop computer from his bedroom that allegedly contained 120 video files of children between the ages of 2 and 14 engaging in sexual behavior, the Fairfield Daily Voice reports.

He was arrested Aug. 20 on charges of first-degree illegal possession of child pornography and promotion of a minor in an obscene performance, and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted of either charge, according to the Wilton Bulletin.
