CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Last week, a Florida student brought home a “Pledge of Allegiance Request” that infuriated her mother and uncle, who vented his frustrations with the notice on Facebook.

“My niece brought this home from school today,” Micah Brienen posted to Facebook last Thursday, along with a picture of the document. “What is happening to our country?!”

The letter, sent home from Killearn Lakes Elementary School, read:

I understand my rights as a parent and I request that my child, noted above, be excused from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This request includes standing and placing his/her right hand over his/her heart.

In a follow up post, Brienen explained that the “opt out waiver is part of the Leon County Student Handbook in Tallahassee, Florida.”

“The parents are required to sign and return to confirm they received!!” he wrote. “The Superintendent of Schools is Jackie Pons. His direct number is 850-487-7147 and email [email protected],” Brienen continued. “He is up for reelection this year against U.S. Army Vet Rocky Hanna. www.rockyhanna.com. Thank you!! #GodBlessAmerica”

The child’s mother, Brienen’s sister-in-law, sent the letter back to school officials but did not sign or date the document, WGHP reports. Instead, she wrote them a little note.

“This is the dumbest thing I have ever read and I am so ashamed of this,” the mother wrote.

More than 15,800 people have shared Brienen’s Facebook post over the last four days.

“I am so proud of my daughter in law for her response and my son for bringing it to attention on Facebook,” Randy Brienen wrote in the comments. “We live in a very different country than my grandfather and father served in the military for. They would hang their heads in shame. As do I.”

Virtually everyone who commented about the form online shared the Brienen family’s outrage.

“We’re in real trouble,” Charlotte Cowen posted.

“Eight years of Obama and a Congress that has done zero to stop him,” Steve Cown added.

“I’m thinking I would pull my kids out of that school immediately!” Amy Bentley wrote. “Scary thing is, it probably won’t be long before that type of ridiculousness is everywhere.”

“Should be a requirement,” Jeremy Mader wrote. “Not a request.”

“Omg seriously? Just another example of 99% of us having to jump through hoops for the 1% who are offended. Boo hoo,” Lisa Hermann Davis added.

“I love the response on the request!” Elisabeth French Boyett posted.  “So let me get this straight: To become a citizen, you have to learn and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights; but we do not require American children in public schools to pledge their allegiance to their country flag?”
