There were 46 separate charges for at least $100. There were individual charges of $1,328.20, $1,105.52 and $3,859.64.

While $18,000-plus may seem like a big food tab for a public school district that’s spending public money, it was only a fraction of the total.

In fiscal 2016-17, the folks from the Santa Ana district charged $113,427.62 at restaurants and catering businesses, according to information obtained through a public information request.

There were 936 individual transactions, so the average purchase came to around $121.

The restaurant fans from the school district had other favorite eateries besides the Corner Bakery Cafe.

They spent $15,149.13 in 96 transactions at Subway; $6,063.36 in four charges at Country Garden Caterers; $4,112.74 in five charges at Papa John’s pizza; $3,675.51 in four charges at Krispy Kreme; $3,475.25 in just three transactions at Taquizas Jiminez (including a single charge for $2,700); $2,970.48 in 24 transactions at Pizza Hut; and $2,188.03 in 22 charges at Round Table Pizza.

The Santa Ana school folks also clearly liked to sample, instead of eating at the same old places. According to our count, they charged food at 295 different restaurants in California and various cities around the nation in 2016-17.

They ate at unique places like the Old Fisherman’s Grotto in Monterey, California; the Labriola Ristorante in Chicago; the Hog’s Breath Inn in Carmel, California; the Grand Lux Cafe in Chicago; Duke’s Charbroiler in Lakewood, California, and Rita’s on the River in San Antonio…just to name a very few.

That all sounds like a lot of pricey dining for a school district that sent layoff notices to 287 employees – mostly teachers – just over a year ago, according to the Orange County Register.

If you add on the $111,435,09 the district spent on flights and other costs with Southwest Airlines, you could probably come up with enough money to save a few of those teaching jobs.

But that’s up to the residents and taxpayers of the Santa Ana district to decide.
