PHILADELPHIA – A Philadelphia teacher faces criminal charges after police allege he verbally threatened them during a protest downtown following the deadly clash in Charlottesville earlier this month.

Philadelphia police arrested 63-year-old John Edward Sheerin Friday night and charged him with making terroristic threats and harassing a Philadelphia police officer during a protest at the city’s Municipal Services Building on Aug. 16, Philly.com reports.

Sheerin was among a mob that descended on the 10-foot-tall bronze statue of former city police commissioner and mayor Frank Rizzo as part of a “Philly is Charlottesville” protest calling for the removal of the statue.

A video captured by reporter Helen Ubinas showed Sheerin and several other protestors berating police and accusing them of assault.

“You’re a f**king coward!” Sheerin yelled at police. “You’re done. You gutless bitch.”

“You f**king cowardly bitch … I’ll take his head off if he doesn’t have that badge and gun,” he said.

“When this shit gets real, this old man will beat your ass to kingdom come,” he said.

Sheerin has ignored numerous requests for comment about the ordeal from Philly.com and NBC Philadelphia.

Sheerin did, however, take to Facebook after he was bailed out of jail to thank his supporters for camping out in front of the jail in a show of solidarity.

“I really can’t believe you guys stayed out there all night. It must have been so uncomfortable. But I learned something about discomfort from my first night in a cell,” he wrote. “There’s nothing SOFT in a cell!”

Black Lives Matter Pennsylvania also posted to Facebook to salute Sheerin for mouthing off to police.

“Our comrade is home safe and sound,” BLM leader Asa Khalif wrote. “This man is a true soldier in the fight for justice. Proud to have him as a friend and ally. Thanks John Sheerin. #Salute.”

Philadelphia school district spokesman Lee Whack told NBC Philadelphia Sheerin was suspended from his duties amid an investigation into his conduct that started before his arrest on Friday.

Sheerin most recently taught at Julia De Burgos Elementary School.

“The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. This is a matter which we take very seriously,” Whack said. “The School District is aware of his arrest, but prior to his arrest Mr. Sheerin had been under investigation. He has been removed from his school pending our investigation.”

His suspension, of course, gave Sheerin more free time to pursue his obvious passion for protesting, as he also attended a BLM protest on Thursday night at the home of a police officer involved in a shooting that killed a man earlier this year.

Sheerin is currently free on a $5,000 bail and is scheduled for a hearing on the threat charge for Sept. 26.
