FAYETTE COUNTY, Tenn. – Many parents move into certain neighborhoods just for the schools, and some are quickly finding out the feds have other plans for them.

In a program called “controlled choice,” Fayette County school leaders are attempting to comply with a “federal law” that “ordered the school system to become more racially diverse,” according to WMC Action News 5.

The law dates back to 1965, the news station reports.

“After parents dropped their kids off on the first day of schools, some Fayette County parents hit the picket line to try and keep their kids in schools they’re most familiar with,” WMC reports.

In an apparent move to instill racial harmony, school leaders are forcing students to attend certain schools, despite a preferred one, or even one they’d normally be assigned to, being closer.

“We’re going to follow the rules, and we want this to be disruptive to the least amount of students as possible but the point it, some people have to make a change,” Fayette County School Superintendent James Teague tells the news station.

“There has to be something different they can do so that these babies aren’t refused from schools they’re districted to go to,” parent Jamie Kellum tells WMC.

At this point, Teague and other administrators don’t seem too interested in doing “something different.”

But why do parents allow the government schools to tell them where they can or can’t send their children, regardless of whether they’re “districted” to attend a particular school or not?

“They have control, we have no choice. I live a mile and a half from Oakland Elementary and they wouldn’t let me take my son to school there,” another parent, Kevin Barrett, adds.

Barrett has a choice – leave the Fayette County system and enroll his child in a school that’s actually interested in listening to parents and not bowing to federal edicts.

Until then, parents will continue to suffer under so-called “controlled choice.”
