JACKSON, Miss. – Parents of Jackson State University graduates are growing annoyed at the school for repeatedly rescheduling the 2016 commencement to accommodate first lady Michelle Obama.

Parent Diana Kimbrough told WAPT that school officials have repeatedly shuffled the graduation schedule to appease Obama, who is scheduled to give an address at the event April 23.

Initially, the graduation was set for April 30, she said.

“We got notice 30 days out that it’s being changed to April 23,” Kimbrough said. “Initially it was going to be 8 a.m., then it changed to 10 a.m., then it changed to 3 p.m.”

The first lady has delivered commencement addresses at historically black colleges each year of her husband’s presidency, and the speech at Jackson State is one of three speeches she’ll make in 2016, the others at Santa Fe Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico on May 26 and at City College of New York on June 3, according to the White House website.

“The First Lady will deliver the address at Jackson State University’s 139th Spring Commencement Ceremony,” the site reads. “Mrs. Obama will address more than 1,000 graduates as well as their friends, family and members of the university community.”

Kimbrough contends more than 60 of her relatives initially planned on attending the commencement, and the repeated schedule changes caused problems for some purchasing plane tickets and making other arrangements. The college also later imposed restrictions on who can attend, she told WAPT.

“We had to go back (and) change those reservations to accommodate April 23,” she said. “Now we’re being told that only 15 people out of this party of over 60 adults and multiple children (who) are coming to Jackson for this graduation” can attend.

“We can only get 15 tickets,” Kimbrough said.

WJTV reports that JSU officials first changed the commencement date in February “to make accommodations for high profile speakers.”

The university issued a statement to the news site about the First Lady’s visit earlier this month, when the time for the event at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium was still 10 a.m.

“We are honored and very pleased to have First Lady Michelle Obama as the Commencement Speaker for the graduating class of 2016. This is the first time in the history of the University that a sitting First Lady addressed our graduates,” the statement read. “It reaffirms that JSU always strives for the best for our students. This Commencement promises to be an occasion that students will never forget.”

Congressman Bennie Thompson also gushed out Obama’s scheduled visit.

“We, in the State of Mississippi, are thrilled to have First Lady Michelle Obama at Jackson State University for its upcoming commencement ceremony.  Mrs. Obama is a great role model for all Americans and has done an exemplary job as First Lady through her many initiatives that support healthy lifestyles, higher education, and military families.  The high standard she has set as First Lady of the United States will be the bar by which all future first ladies are judged.  The graduates, families, alumni and JSU Tiger supporters the world over will remember this historic commencement ceremony,” Thompson wrote in a statement.

The first lady’s visits to Jackson have mostly revolved around her initiatives. The commencement address is part of her Reach Higher education initiative, and her last visit in 2013 – with celebrity chef Rachel Ray – centered on her “Let’s Move” obesity campaign, WJTV reports.
