INDIANAPOLIS – Officials at an Indianapolis middle school are conducting an internal investigation into a brawl that broke out among adults in the stands of an eighth-grade girls basketball game.

Police responded Thursday to a scuffle that spilled out from the stands onto the court in the final minutes of the county championship game between Westlane and Creston middle schools. By the time they arrived around, the crowd was largely dispersed and they left 10 minutes later, the Indianapolis Star reports.

Ken Cox, an assistant principal at host Westlane Middle School, was injured while attempting to break up the fight, which involved roughly three dozen adults. Lawrence was treated and released from the hospital, but the extent of his injuries are unknown, according to the Star.

“With the eighth grade team leading by 14 points and about 4:00 minutes left in the game, a physical altercation broke out between adults in the bleachers,” Westlane principal Linda Lawrence said in a note to parents.

“Westlane students were not seated near the altercation and remained in their section of the bleachers.”

Witness John Roberts told the Star about 40 people were involved in the melee, which forced officials to stop the game. The whole thing lasted about two to three minutes, he said.

“There was so much chaos, it’s so hard to tell who got involved,” Roberts told the Star. “It was pretty disappointing to have parents attending a game to see someone behave like that in front of children.”

Officials at the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township issued a statement about the incident, Fox 59 reports.

“We applaud the athletes from both competing teams and know that inappropriate choices by spectator adults, does not tarnish their outstanding seasons and efforts they have made,” the statement read.

“The behavior of the adult spectators involved in this altercation (is) unacceptable and Washington Township will remain fully cooperative with law enforcement throughout their investigation,” the statement said, according to the Star.

Washington Township schools safety and security coordinator Brian Clouse told the news site the district is also conducting its own investigation into the fight.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lt. Brian Clouse told the Star no arrests or reports were generated from the brawl.

Those who commented on the news online were obviously not impressed with spectators at the game.
