PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. – The apparent lack of oversight when it comes to school spending is nothing new. One Maryland school board is just a recent case of a clear misuse of school funds.

Maryland’s Prince George’s County school board members have been eating well, and all on the district’s tab. They have used district-issued credit cards to pay for thousands of dollars in meals at local restaurants, according to The Washington Post.

The restaurant charges are not from traveling out of state, but come from restaurants located just miles from the district. Vice Chairman Carolyn M. Boston used her district credit card to pay a $29 room-service tab for breakfast during a retreat the board held at a National Harbor hotel. Her card was used again for several meals at an Upper Marlboro restaurant located roughly two miles from school district headquarters, according to the news site.

Another board member, Verjeana Jacobs, used her district-issued credit card to pay for an $82 dinner at Jerry’s Seafood in Bowie, according to NBC Washington.

The news site reports that the school board members have spent several thousand dollars on more than 120 meals at restaurants all located near school district headquarters.

Even though this looks like a clear misuse of district funds, apparently it does not violate the rules.

“School district policy allows board members to charge up to $7,000 a year on their credit cards to pay for ‘travel and other expenses related to board duties,’” according to the news site.

There are no limits on daily spending in Prince George’s policy. The spending does not stop at restaurants, either.

“The district also paid for overnight stays for some board members during its retreat at the Westin at National Harbor,” according to The Washington Post.

It might be worth mentioning that the Westin is located less than 20 miles from district headquarters.

Unfortunately, this practice of school spending is not really a surprise, given recent EAGnews reporting.

Through our “Where Your School Dollars Go” series, we have spent countless hours going through school district’s check registers and have found numerous examples of outrageous school spending in districts around the country, including the more than $300,000 Tucson Unified School District racked up in hotel bills, the $500,000 travel tab at Atlanta Public Schools, and the nearly $300,000 that Jefferson County Public Schools in Kentucky spent on hotels in a single school year.

Perhaps the district will strip some school board members of their district-issued credit cards. After an internal auditor found that former school board member Carletta Fellows charged more than $700 in unauthorized charges for utility bills, they school board stripped her of her card, according to the news site.

However, that does not look like it is in the cards quite it.

Associate general counsel for the district, Demetria T. Tobias, said that Segun C. Eubanks, the board’s chairman, has asked the Office of Internal Audits to review its credit card policy and guidelines to “clarify any ambiguous language,” according to the Post.

“This in no way implies that the Board members have used their credit cards inappropriately, but does indicate that the Board of Education wants to maintain the highest level of integrity and accountability within its fiscal system,” he said.
