NEW YORK – On March 2, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio lifted a years-long cell phone ban in schools put in place by his predecessor.

About a week later, a 15-year-old freshman at John Dewey High School snapped a picture up the skirt of his new, young Spanish teacher. The image was shared and posted to Facebook, prompting his classmates to report the incident to school officials Thursday, the New York Post reports.

“It’s outrageous to have a kid take an inappropriate cellphone picture of a teacher,” an unidentified Dewey teacher told the Post. “This is something that should never happen.”

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a ban on cell phones in the city’s public schools, but the measure was reversed by Mayor de Blasio effective March 2. Before the cell phone ban was lifted, students would stash their devices with businesses that charged 50 cents to $1 to hold them until school got out.

The new policy tasks principals of each school with crafting their own school-specific cell phone policy. At Dewey, students can bring the devices to school, but are supposed to keep them turned off and put away during class time, the Post and CBS New York report.

“That’s mad stupid, that’s like invading her privacy,” one student told CBS New York.

“They have a rule that we’re not supposed to take pictures in school anyway, so he should know that,” senior Jessica Chen told the news site.

Senior Traynell White was also concerned about the incident.

“He broke the code, he broke the law,” White told CBS New York. “We have laws for that, taking pictures of a teacher is really unacceptable.”

Teachers at Dewey and the new Spanish teacher’s parents seem to agree.

“A lot of teachers are concerned about the lifting of the ban,” a Dewey staffer told the Post. “It has really traumatized the teacher.”

The new Spanish teacher reportedly returned to school Monday, after he parents showed up at the school and threatened to sue the city over the incident, according to the news site.

The mother of the accused student, meanwhile, is standing by her son, and is blaming his antics on the teacher.

“The teacher was dressed inappropriately,” she told the Post.

Students at the school disagreed.

“She dresses normally,” one student told the news site. “I mean, to me, she doesn’t stand out too much. She just looks young.”

The city’s Department of Education told CBS New York officials are “dealing sternly with the student,” but would not detail his punishment.

“The matter could end up in family court,” according to the news site.
