MALONE, N.Y. – A Northern New York woman was arrested and charged with child endangerment after her 7-year-old child came to school Thursday with a sandwich with “a leafy green substance on it which was marijuana.”

“It was determined that the child’s mother had placed the sandwich in a plastic baggie that had previously been used to store marijuana and still had some residue in it,” Malone Village Police said in a press release cited by the Press Republican.

School officials apparently contacted Franklin County Child Protective Services, which called police to investigate the incident involving the student at Davis Elementary School.

When officers arrived at the child’s home, they were greeted by a 4-year-old who took them to Alison Johnson, who was sleeping inside the home.

“A ‘marijuana smoking device’ and a baggie containing a small amount of the drug were also discovered in the residence, police said in a news release,” according to the Watertown Daily Times. “In addition to the 4-year-old, a 2-year-old sibling was also found at the home, police said.”

Officers arrested the 26-year-old on three misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child and issued a violation for unlawful possession of marijuana, according to the news site.

Police Chief Chris Premo told the Press Republican the children were also removed from the home.

Johnson was later released on appearance tickets and is now scheduled to appear in Malone Town Court on Jan. 31.

Several folks who commented about the situation seemed to think the mother’s arrest was unwarranted.

“Just more stupid Reefer Madness nonsense prosecution of citizens,” Ben James posted to the Press Republican comments. “Raw cannabis cannot get anyone high. You could eat an entire pound of raw cannabis and not catch a buzz. The worst thing that would happen to you is a stomach ache.

“Cannabis must be heated to 180 degrees Celsius or higher or burned before it releases its active ingredient,” James wrote. “Just cuz you got some specks stuck to your sandwich is meaningless. Enough with the lies, just legalize.”

“More cannabis Nazis,” Jimmy Perry added.

Others who commented on NYup.com’s Facebook page commended authorities for stepping in.

“O hate to use this word, but STUPID!!!” Darline Moskwa Van Deusen posted.

“Some people shouldn’t be parents,” Aysel Akbas Yeniyldiz added.

“Good job Franklin County CPS!” Erica Bushley wrote.

“And that my friends is why they call it DOPE,” Johnathan Hubbard posted.
