ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Counselors were on hand after many children witnessed their parents brawling during a Monday school lunch event.

Albuquerque’s Zuni Elementary administrators say an event intended to bring parents and children together during the school day when awry when it devolved into a fist fight among adults.

“During the Thanksgiving luncheon today, there was a physical altercation between several Zuni parents,” a letter home to parents reads.

“The isolated incident happened in Mrs. Lendberg’s classroom, students witnessed this altercation and were upset by it. Zuni Elementary staff and APS police responded immediately and the situation has been dealt with,” according to the letter.

The letter from Principal Franklin Chiki states “the school counselor will be available to speak with any students who were upset.”

“My oldest child went here all six years and it was wonderful,” parent Magdalena Valdez tells KOAT.

“It’s disheartening and obviously shouldn’t really happen. We are adults. We should behave ourselves as such,” she says.

Many parents weren’t aware of the classroom incident until they were told about it by a reporter.

“They definitely need to take serious action against the parents and make sure it never happens again,” another parent says.

District administrators “insist” maintaining a safe learning environment is “always” their number one goal. It’s not clear, then, why they haven’t been more forthcoming with details for parents.

A police report is not yet available.
