CHICAGO – As Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis sizes up a possible run against Rahm Emanuel for mayor of the Windy City, she has some obstacles she’ll have to overcome.

Calling it a “triple threat,” Lewis’ biggest flaws, according to Sun-Times reporter Laura Washington, are “Her looks. Her style. Her resume.”

The Sun-Times reports:

Her looks: Lewis’ sex, race and girth all grate on some voters. It should not matter. But we know better.

Lewis is overweight, has brown skin and nappy hair. That’s a disqualifier for some. When I write about her, I get plenty of hate email targeting her physical appearance. Lewis is a lightning rod for the sexists and racists.

Actually, her far-left political views and disdain for school choice – not to mention her obnoxious behavior – make her a lightning rod for average Americans. Her gender or race have nothing to do with it.

As far as her resume goes, Washington writes:

Her resume: Voters wonder how a schoolteacher and union leader with no government experience can manage a city with a $7 billion budget.

Lewis can’t match Emanuel in government know-how, but she can stress her Ivy League education, management skills and common-sense street knowledge. She is an intellectual with a keen grasp of grass-roots politics.

Washington notes Emanuel “doesn’t have to deal with the triple threat.”

Is the media making excuses for Lewis already?

After all, according to the latest Census data, only 45 percent of the city is “white alone.” A majority of the city’s residents are either black or Latino.

Lewis’ attempts at class warfare likely won’t help her with voters, either.

A fan of Occupy Wall Street, she’s fond of referring to Emanuel as “Mayor 1%.”

But it was recently revealed Lewis makes over $200,000 a year as president of the union. That’s nearly four times the median household income in the city of Chicago.
