NEW ORLEANS – A New Orleans teen was rushed to the hospital with a contusion and scrapes on his face after he was jumped by three men at a bus stop for $5 and his shoes.

The 14-year-old male student was dropped near the intersection of Dwyer Road and Westlake Drive around 4:25 p.m. Tuesday, shortly before he was knocked to the ground and attacked by three men, NOLA.com reports.

The teen told police a man exited a black SUV with a temporary license plate and demanded his cash, which was only $5, before a second man exited the vehicle, pointed a handgun at him and demanded his shoes, according to the news site.

“The boy was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated for a contusion and abrasions to his face, and later released,” police told WWLTV.

The victim described the driver of the SUV as a brown male between 18 and 22 years old with a light-colored bandana tied around his head. The man with the gun was described with a dark complexion, about 5’5” tall and around 160 pounds and wearing a black polo shirt, according to the news site.

The third suspect was a black male, between 17 and 22 years old, who stood about 6’ with shoulder-length dreadlocks and wore a red shirt and blue jeans, police said.

The suspects returned to the vehicle after the robbery and sped away, the teen told police.

Nearly everyone who commented about the incident online were disgusted.

“It may just be a coincidence that the kid was robbed just after exiting the school bus,” SpeedTriple posed to NOLA.com. “It’s more likely that the perps were actually casing a … school bus stop for a target.

“Wow, man, that’s low even for this town.”

Poster FatManInABathtub agreed.

“Sad. Thugs preying on a kid trying to make his way in life the right way,” FatManInABathtub wrote. “I hope he stays on the right path and can get over the rage and desire for revenge and deal with this the right way. Terrible shame what’s happening with some of the young people in this city.”

Others noted that some students have adapted to regular threats of violence over their clothing.

“About a week ago I brought my vehicle into Banner Chevy be serviced. I decided to take the city bus home and wait at home rather than sit at the dealership,” BJ posted.

“As I rode the bus a young man, maybe 13 years old, got on and quietly took his seat. I noticed he had flip flops on and a book sack. A few minutes into the ride he takes off the flip flops and takes out his tennis shoes. It was an eye opening thing to see. Our children live in a perpetual state of fear.”

Some commenters also noted it’s definitely not the first time a student has been robbed at a bus stop.

About a week ago, a 17-year-old student was waiting for a bus at Kabel Drive and MacArthur Boulevard around 6:40 a.m. when a gunman approached and demanded his Air Jordan tennis shoes and iPhone, NOLA reports.
