TRENTON, N.J. – The New Jersey Board of Education approved a list of more than 100 religious holidays for the 2016-17 school year that schools must acknowledge as excused student absences.

The lengthy list posted by NJ.com includes days off for students of numerous faiths, including followers of Christianity, Islam, Baha’i, Buddhism, Hinduism, Wicca, Eastern Orthodox Christian, Judaism, Sikh, Philadelphia Church of God, Shinto, Confuscian, Dioist, Church of Scientology, Zoroastrianism, Jehovah’s Witness, Armenian Orthodox and others.

“Students celebrating those holidays must present a written excuse signed by a parent or guardian,” according to the news site. “Schools are required to provide students the opportunity to make up any tests or other assignments they missed.”

And depending on their religion, students could miss a lot of assignments.

For Islam, for example, the state recognizes five different holy days, including Laylat as-Qadr on July 2 and Eid al Fitr from July 7-9, Hijj Day on Sept. 10, Eid al Adha from Sept. 11-14, Mawlid an Nabi on Dec. 14 and Lailat al Miraj on April 24, as well as Lailat al Bara’ah on May 12.

Jewish students could be excused for more than a dozen holidays spanning about 30 days.

Some Christian students could take off even more days, depending on their denomination.

The announcement of such a long list of recognized holidays prompted a variety of reactions from parents, ranging from applause from those of lesser known religions receiving recognition to atheists who seem upset to be left out.
