An eastern Idaho school district is moving ahead with plans for high school graduations, adapting the tradition to the times to ensure a memorable experience.

The Idaho Falls Post Register reports:

During Wednesday evening’s District 91 Board of Trustees work session held via teleconference, board members unanimously approved the proposal to have graduation ceremonies for all District 91 high schools take place at Motor Vu Drive In theater on North Yellowstone Highway. The idea was introduced by Idaho Falls High School principal Robert Devine, who shared the details with board members during the conference call.

Devine said his wife recently saw a Facebook post about utilizing a drive in theater for a graduation ceremony in another state. For District 91’s ceremonies, Volstar Productions, Inc. will provide the video and audio, the Idaho Falls Police Department will provide traffic control and manage entry and exit, Preston-based Acme Discount Fireworks will provide a fireworks display following each school’s graduation and Bell Photography will be present to photograph each ceremony to create a memory book they will have available for online purchase.

Students will receive their tickets in a bag with a cap, gown, tassel and diploma cover, with each ceremony starting around 9:30 p.m. Instead of a stage presence, a photo of each graduate will appear on screen as a school counselor reads their names out loud. The “Pomp and Circumstance” will play for about a half hour, and conclude with a fireworks display in each school’s colors, according to the news site.

Idaho Falls senior class president Evelyn Shull said many students didn’t like the idea of a virtual graduation, and she’s “ecstatic” about the drive-in. The ceremony is also expected to be livestreamed for folks who can’t make it to the theater.

“It’s been hard on me having to miss out on things I’ve been looking forward to the past four years,” she said during a teleconference with school officials. “I think this will be more memorable and more exciting than a traditional graduation would be.”

District 91 spokeswoman Margaret Wimborne told the Post Register officials will email parents with details about the graduation plans, but they won’t be expected to cover any of the costs. The Idaho Falls School District 91 Education Foundation is picking up the tab for all schools.

“We’re happy to come forward and cover the expenses so schools don’t have to worry about it,” she said.

Schools in Kentucky are also exploring the possibility of graduations at drive-ins, a suggestion made by Gov. Andy Beshear when he canceled classes for the rest of the year earlier this month, Kentucky.com reports.

At Model Laboratory School at Eastern Kentucky University, graduation ceremonies will take place next month online and at the parking lot of the EKU Alumni Coliseum, where participants will be expected to remain in their vehicles at all times.

“By doing both, we believe it will bring a sense of finality, where students can see others – even at a distance – and will allow family members who are staying healthy at home to witness the celebration,” spokeswoman Kristi Middleton told the news site. “We think this approach will be unique and appropriate considering the circumstances.”
