BALTIMORE, Md. – A Baltimore mother is demanding answers after her 9-year-old son come home from school with three teeth missing.

Shanda Flemming told WJZ her son Michael participated in a visiting dental program at Beechfield Elementary/Middle School #256 last week for what she thought was routine cleanings, and she was outraged when the boy arrived home with several teeth missing.

Flemming said she was never notified by school officials about the procedure, which forced Michael to miss the bus and required him to walk nearly a mile home with a swollen mouth afterwards.

“I’m angry about this,” Flemming said. “I don’t think it should have happened like that.”

The boy lost one bottom front tooth, and two on his right side, one on top and another on the bottom. The third-grader appeared to be in serious pain when a WJZ reporter visited his home on Friday.

“They just said they was gonna clean my teeth,” Michael said.

Flemming acknowledged that she signed a permission slip to allow her son to participate in the visiting dental program, but thought it was for a routine cleaning. She assumed officials would at least call if he needed more serious work.

The mother said her son was already scheduled to meet with the family’s dentist on Monday.

“I just don’t understand how a school or a company can take it in their hands to do something like this to a child,” she said.

WJZ reports that Prince George’s County schools has increased efforts to promote dental hygiene and host free clinics after a district student died of an infected tooth in 2007.

District officials refused to discuss the incident with the news site because of HIPPA privacy protections.

Flemming said Michael to missed the bus because of the procedure, which forced him to walk home in serious pain.

“He walked home alone after having three teeth extracted from his mouth,” she said. “He could have fell out or anything.”

Numerous parents who commented on Facebook were outraged by the incident.

“He had three teeth removed, which required some sort of anesthetic; local at the very least, and they sent him home with no adult supervision? And what about pain medicine? What the hell kind of operation are they running?” Anita Foster wrote.

It was irresponsible to do any procedure without a minimal of a written permission and the child should have NEVER been released without supervision. BUT WAIT … ??? School dentist? What schools have dentists?” Nicole Theriault added.

“Husband is dentist and this is the most mind blowing thing I have ever heard of never ever would he ever doing anything so crazy!” Nicole Solomon posted.

“Those are some BS answers. They need to make clear whether their policies and procedures were violated by this,” James Phillips said of the district’s nonresponse. “There’s room for transparency without violating HIPPA. That’s absolutely an unacceptable answer.”
