FLORISSANT, Mo.- School board members are ultimately responsible for how school dollars are spent.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that the Hazelwood, Missouri school district has been the target of an ongoing state financial audit, which was demanded by angry parents.

Hazelwood board members apparently love to spend money, particularly on food, seemingly every time they meet.

EAGnews recently acquired credit card records for fiscal 2016-17 from the Hazelwood district through a public records requests.

Those records revealed 20 food purchases for school board meetings, totaling $3,597.66.

On Dec. 1, 2016, the board ordered $92.98 worth of food from Lee’s Famous Recipe for its accountability meeting and another $234.97 worth of grub from Panera Bread for its regular meeting.

There’s an order of $183.65 from Marco’s Pizza for the Dec. 6, 2016 board meeting, an order of $149.34 from Honeybaked Ham for a Dec. 8 meeting, and an order of $74.86 from Lee’s Famous Recipe for a Dec. 14 meeting.

The same trend continued in January. The board spent $78.99 at Lee’s for its Jan. 9 meeting, $206.63 at Panera Bread for its Jan. 10 meeting, $263.81 at Banda for its Jan. 17 meeting, and $196.23 at Panera Bread for its Jan. 31 meeting.

The school board also had food brought in for meetings in July, September, October, and November, according to district records.

The school board’s restaurant tastes apparently rubbed off on personnel throughout the district.

District credit cards were used to make at least 371 transactions at restaurants or catering services over the course of the fiscal year, for a total of $44,280.42.

By far the most popular item was pizza from various establishments. We counted 96 transactions for a total of $10,083.45. One very popular restaurant was Panera Bread, where we counted 24 transactions for $3,964.26.

Thousands of dollars worth of restaurant food was ordered on a routine basis, for all sorts of school district events, or sometimes for no apparent reason at all.

The district spent $341.26 for a catered lunch from Lee’s. There was a charge for $76.75 for “shakes for all staff” at Steak and Shake. The district spent $200.86 at Lee’s as “food for annual inspection.” There was a big food tab for parent-teacher conferences, including $330.30 at Pharoah’s Pizza, $287.87 at Pizza Hut and $340 at Fazoli’s.

Another $243.14 was spent on a “curriculum night staff dinner.” There was $973.78 spent on an “honor roll dinner.” There was $630 spent on an eighth-grade orientation lunch. There was a charge of $576.35 at Lee’s for a “PD (police department) working lunch.”

There was a $186.94 transaction with Panera Bread for a “principal’s meeting breakfast.” There was a $557.75 order from Honeybaked Ham for a “principals meeting lunch.” There was $356.59 spent at Panera Bread for a “staff breakfast.”

The district spent $199.41 at Panera Bread for a “back to school breakfast.” It spent $184.50 at Honeybaked Ham to “purchase food for registration.” There was $542.77 spent on dinner for an”orientation meeting.”

There was a $494.25 purchase from Panera Bread for a “continental staff breakfast.” Another $239.98 was spent at Panera Bread for a “teachers breakfast.”

The school district even spent $69.90 at Pizza Hut on “lunch for bus inspection.”

Those are just a very few examples. The list goes on and on.

It’s no wonder that the citizens of the Hazelwood district want the state to find out just how much money school officials have spent in recent years, and on what.

It will be interesting to see the findings of the audit.
