ANN ARBOR, Mich. – An Ann Arbor middle school student was suspended for a week after she “viciously attacked” a classmate just outside of the school’s front entrance, but the victim’s mother believes more should be done.

Mother Geri Georgiandis told WJBK her eighth-grade daughter was attacked by a former friend just after she dropped her off in front of Slauson Middle School on Wednesday. Georgiandis’ daughter was beaten repeatedly by the other girl as other students stood by and recorded the fight on video, the video and school officials confirmed.

“As she was approaching the entrance to the school she was viciously and barbarically attacked from another young lady as the other girls looked on,” Georgiandis said. “She was knocked down, repeatedly hit in the head.”

Video shows the girl was also dragged by her hair briefly.

The Slauson principal told WJBK the girl who instigated the attack was suspended from school for seven days, but Georgiandis doesn’t think it’s nearly enough.

“This is not a seven day suspension,” the mother told the news site. “This was not a fight. This was a malicious, premeditated attack and it needs to dealt with as such.”

Georgiandis said that if school leaders refuse to step up with a more severe punishment, she plans to enroll her daughter somewhere else.

“I’ll be looking for another district. Not just another school, another district,” she said. “This is not okay. And this message needs to be sent out to Ann Arbor and everywhere else. There are different schools and places for children like this. There are alternative schools for them.”

An Ann Arbor Police investigation into the fight is ongoing. Georgiandis contends the fight started because her daughter decided not to sit with her attacker anymore during lunch.

School officials released a statement that alleges they handled the situation, but can’t discuss the details.

“We absolutely have taken appropriate disciplinary actions in this incident in keeping with the guidelines and procedures set forth in the Rights and Responsibilities for students, teachers, staff, parents and guardians,” Ann Arbor Public Schools communications specialist Andrew Cluley wrote.

“Situations involving student discipline are kept appropriately confidential …”

The attack prompted more than 180 comments and 500 shares on Facebook over the last day.

“There is no excuse for anyone to viciously attack another student like that,” Jennifer Vivian posted. “If she thinks she’s so tough send her to a woman’s prison for an hour and see how tough she is. It’s ridiculous.”

“This girl that was hitting the girl on the ground needs to be out of that school ASAP. Why would she keep beating her like that, she’s got some issues going on,” Sandra Dunn added. “There’s no excuse for that. She will do it again and next time she might have something in her hand to kill someone. She needs to get help. Mom is 100 percent right.”
