A Flint, Michigan school is taking drastic measures after a 10-year-old boy brought a loaded, stolen handgun to school and showed it off to his friends.

Administrators at Eagle’s Nest Academy posted a notice to parents on social media Friday explaining how they’re reacting to the gun incident last week, and a new change moving forward.

“Today we were able to have age appropriate assembles (sic) about school safety and weapons with our scholars in grades 2-6. We are asking that parents have conversations with scholars in K and 1 over the weekend,” the statement read.

“On Monday each scholar will be gifted a clear book bag,” it continued. “Please do not send your child with a book bag or purse. Scholars will be required to utilize the provided book bag. We are also asking that you check your child’s things and coats before they leave home.”

The announcement came the day after a 10-year-old boy told classmates he brought a gun to school and one of the students alerted school officials, WNEM reports.

Flint Police Detective Sgt. Tyrone Booth said school officials called officers to the school around 10:30 a.m. Thursday because a student “made some other students aware he was in possession of a firearm.”

School officials put the school on lock down for about 45 minutes, Mlive reports.

“Another student got involved (and) was able to retrieve the firearm and take it to the main office school building,” Booth said. “We’re grateful that it occurred in that manner and something didn’t go wrong having done that.”

“It … can be a dangerous situation getting involved, but a courageous student who knew that something wasn’t right stepped in and made adults in the building aware of that and also removing something that can potentially cause great harm,” he said.

The student who brought the gun to school is now charged with two felonies for carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault, as well as a misdemeanor for carrying a weapon in a gun-free zone, WJRT reports.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton told the news site the handgun was loaded and stolen, though it remains unclear how the student got his hands on it.

The student was charged as a juvenile and booked into the Genesee county Regional Detention Center.

In the notice to parents, Eagle’s Nest officials said they “will continue to have assemblies about school safety and the idea that it’s ‘OK to say,’ specifically it’s OK to come and share information with adults about things that could be harmful.”

The charter school also hosted a “Coffee with the Principal” session with parents on Friday to answer questions about the incident and how the school is taking action.

The Flint school certainly isn’t the only one concerned about youngsters toting handguns.

On Friday, a 6-year-old walked into Columbus Africentric Early College in Ohio with a loaded handgun in his pants. A school resource officer noticed the heavy object weighing him down and confiscated the weapon. The kindergartener wasn’t charged in that case because of his age, Columbus Police posted to Twitter, but “the investigation is ongoing.”
