Miller had apparently approached a woman walking along the street around 7 a.m., brandished a knife and demanded the use of a car. When she couldn’t produce one, Miller hijacked the school bus which had pulled over at a nearby apartment complex.

Miller later explained that “there were people after him, and the only way to get away was to hijack the bus,” according to the news report. He indicated that he had no intention of harming the students or anyone else.

Miller, who has a lengthy arrest record, was charged with vehicle piracy, 12 counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault and numerous traffic violations.
