PERRY, Iowa – Parents who attended a kindergarten concert in Perry, Iowa last week were left shaking their heads after one audience member began chanting “English only! USA!” when a Spanish interpreter took the stage.

Hundreds of angry parents booed a man at the Perry Performing Arts Center after he interrupted a Spanish language translation of the introduction to a kindergarten play with chants of “English only! USA!” last Thursday, KCCI reports.

As soon as the Spanish interpreter took the stage, “the guy stood up and just started ranting and raving ‘English only,’” parent Sara Benedict told the news station.

The man, who was not identified, was escorted out of the concert while students watched.

“I’ve never heard anything like that,” Benedict said. “It hurt me real bad.”

Parent Juan Ordonez said the incident was “like a hate crime.” His nephew recorded the altercation on video, and Ordonez sent the footage in to KCCI.

“I think it gives the wrong idea to the kids, you know, like more bullying in schools,” he said. “I told him last night he needs to send the video and I can make sure someone knows what’s going on in Perry and maybe they’ll stop.”

Benedict said he was especially upset that the young students were exposed to the man’s belligerent antics.

“Those kids don’t know nothing … and when they’re up there those are their friends,” she said, according to KEYETV.

“No one we spoke to today can identify who the man is who made the chant and we’ve seen no postings to indicate who he is,” KCCI reporter Vanessa Peng said. “We reached out to Perry Community Schools multiple times but have yet to hear back from them.”

Many people who commented about the episode on Facebook were clearly not impressed with the man’s chant.

“It takes a special kind of cold heart to display your hatred at a kids program,” Jennifer Williams posted.

“I for one am very angry and upset. It was NOT the time or place! These are innocent 5- and 6-year-olds who worked very hard and just wanted to sing and show off their hard work just to have an ignorant jerk try to ruin it for them,” Monica Gonzalez wrote.

“I find it very disturbing that a grown adult thought it was okay to do this with the children present. You have an issue, deal with it with adults,” she continued. “Don’t terrify and scare little children over something they had no control over. My 6-year-old was excited for this concert and talked non-stop about it for weeks. Racism is wrong and to bring it to a child’s even like this made it way worse.”

Jessica Zamago posted that she hopes the man gets what he deserves.

“Such a sad, disgusting, and racist individual. And in front of all those kids what were probably just scared and confused,” she wrote. “That guy needs a lesson in tolerance. I hope a big Mexican who didn’t speak a lick of English ‘helped’ him to his car.”
