BATON ROUGE, La. – Teachers unions and school boards across Louisiana are lining up to challenge the state’s new private school voucher program in court.

They apparently have no respect for parents all over the state who want this opportunity for their children.

The Louisiana Department of Education says it has received more than 6,000 applications for private school vouchers, which is more than the 5,150 vouchers that are expected to be available in the fall, according to BusinessReport.com.

The application total is expected to swell considerably, because there is still a week before the deadline, and schools are still processing applications and forwarding them to the state.

Unfortunately the will of the people will play no role in the decision of the education establishment to legally challenge the voucher program. That’s because school districts and teachers unions would lose money as more students opted for private schools.

It seems to us that a little competition would be good for the state’s public schools. If they ended up bleeding students and losing money, they would be smart to take a hard look at what’s not working in their classrooms.

But school boards and unions would prefer to keep the students (and the state aid attached to each of them) trapped in public schools. That means they are more concerned about maintaining their piece of the financial pie than they are about educating children.

Shame on the educrats for clinging to their self-serving agenda. The families of Louisiana clearly want school choice, and that should be the bottom line.
