KALAMAZOO, Mich. – As the old adage goes, you reap what you sow.

The Kalamazoo Valley Community College Federation of Teachers union is being reminded of that timeless lesson the hard way.

Beginning this fall, part-time faculty at KVCC will be limited to nine contact hours per semester, according to a report from Mlive.com. The college is making the change to avoid extra insurance costs associated with President Obama’s Affordable Care Act.

According to the language of the ACA, large employers, such as colleges, are required to provide health insurance for employees working 30 hours or more per week, or face a fine. If the college limits the part- time faculty to nine contact hours per semester, it would not be subject to the legal requirements.

The KVCC teachers union is irate about the changes. Union officials are claiming that the modification in working hours violates the law and should be subject to collective bargaining. The union is also livid because the changes will affect instructors with “proven track records.”

But once again, you reap what you sow. The union clearly has a problem with the president’s health care program, yet the polls tell us most educators enthusiastically endorsed Obama’s re-election bid.

The president was endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers, the parent union of the KVCC union.

As AFT President Randi Weingarten said during the union’s endorsement for President Obama, “This election is a choice, not a referendum.”

Well, the union made its choice and now must live with the consequences.

Kalamazoo Valley Community College isn’t the first institution to cut back hours for part-time faculty due to Obamacare, and it certainly won’t be the last. We suppose the president never stopped to wonder how his new law might affect his loyal pals in academia.
