BOSTON – A Jewish organization at Northeastern University is condemning swastikas scrawled in the common area of a dorm last weekend, and is blaming the antics on a movement to boycott Israel.

“I don’t think it’s coincidental that the swastika appeared in the same residence hall where [Students for Justice in Palestine] conducted ‘dorm storming’ with mock eviction notices last spring, and went door-to-door soliciting signatures for their divestment petition, in violation of quiet hours, during midterms just a few weeks ago,” Arinne Braverman, executive director of the Northeastern University Hillel wrote in an email, according to MassLive.com.

“To me, it isn’t important if the same individuals were involved: hate begets hate and it appears we’re experiencing the after effects now.”

Braverman stressed that the school’s Jewish students “will not be bullied by these cowardly acts,” the news site reports.

University president Joseph Aoun wrote in a mass campus email that a residential assistant found swastikas in the common area of the International Village student dorm around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

“These actions are completely antithetical to the values of our university and all that we stand for,” the email read, according to the Associated Press.

Braverman told MassLive that a religious door hanging known as a mezuzah was also damaged at an off-campus apartment over the weekend.

The incidents follow similar antics at the school in recent months. In November, swastikas were also drawn on fliers for an Israeli military official visiting the school, MassLive reports.

Northeastern’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine and other far-left student groups were quick to condemn the recent anti-Semitism.

Students for Justice in Palestine, Progressive Student Alliance, Queer Student Union, Husky Environmental Action Team, DivestNU, Sexual Health Advocacy Resource Center, Feminist Student Organization, Islamic Society of Northeastern University, 15 Now Northeastern, and Socialist Alternative Northeastern issued a joint press release Monday.

“As a coalition of student groups devoted to social justice and equal rights for all, we find such symbols to be deplorable and intolerable,” according to the statement.

“We find it deeply saddening that expression at our university has descended to its current state. It is our hope that all organized student groups will join us in our call to elevate the quality of discourse at our school, and reject the notion that any group on campus promotes this type of behavior. …

“There is not, nor has there ever been, a place at our university for symbols reminiscent of such dark chapters in human history. To that end, we hope that those responsible are found and held accountable for their actions.”
