AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 26-year-old married high school teacher recently revealed she’s pregnant amid a criminal investigation into an allegedly sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

St. Augustine High School teacher Virginia Houston Hinckley was suspended with pay in October when a teacher overheard rumors she was sexually involved with a male student in her English class, WJXT reports.

She was arrested last week on a second-degree felony charge of unlawful sexual activity with a minor and released on a $10,000 bond last Wednesday. The next day, a family member posted a picture to Facebook of Hinckley posing with a man – presumably her husband – and her dog amid a patch of pumpkins, with a sign reading “coming May 2016,” Action News Jax reports.

“In the post, the family member says she can’t wait to meet her new relative,” according to the news site.

St. Johns County School District superintendent Joseph Joyner is expected to recommend that the school board change Hinckley’s status to unpaid at its Dec. 8 meeting.

The teacher’s arrest warrant states the male student told investigators he was “flirty” with his teacher when school started, commented on how pretty she was, and “tickled” her. The student said he asked for Hinckley’s phone number and she initially refused, but gave it to him the next day when he asked again, WJXT reports.

The student began texting his teacher and the two exchanged nude photos, including images of Hinckley’s breasts and other body parts, according to court records. Sometime in mid-August the two began kissing and touching in Hinckley’s classroom before opting to meet up at Treaty Park, where they allegedly had unprotected sex in the back seat of the teacher’s vehicle, according to the news site.

“Later that day, Hinckley sent the student a text message that said, ‘You better keep your mouth shut about this,’” WJXT reports. “They continued to exchange text messages for about a week and then stopped all communication, the warrant said.”

Police took statements from several students about the alleged relationship, as well as a witness who allegedly saw Hinckley waiting for the student before they headed to Treaty Park. Investigators seized Hinckley’s vehicle and swabbed it for DNA, and also poured through the student’s and teacher’s cell phone records, according to the WJXT.

Police reports contend Hinckley initially denied any physical contact with the student, and said because she’s young with a “bubbly personality” she can seem like a flirt. The teacher later said the two hugged and he gave her a peck kiss.

“It’s not right, and I think more and more things like this are happening,” said parent Liza Sporanzi, whose son was in the same class as the alleged victim. “I don’t know what people think they are trying to get away with these days.”

Action News Jax attempted unsuccessfully to contact Hinckley at her Jacksonville home.

It’s unclear whether the alleged victim is the father of Hinckley’s unborn child, but an expected May 2016 birth date would mean the child was conceived in August.
