SANDUSKY, Ohio — In 2015-16, the Sandusky City School District received the following grades on the state of Ohio’s school district report card:

Achievement on state tests – F.

Student progress – D.

Gap closing for at-risk student population – F.

Graduation rate – D.

Kindergarten through Grade 3 literacy – D.

Students prepared for success – D.

Those grades were not so good. Yet Sandusky educators (teachers, counselors and others working with students) made good money.

In 2015-16, 260 educators in the district were paid a total of $16,455,528 in straight salary. That averages out to $63,290 per educators.

That same group received $3,568,264 in benefits, which averages out to $13,724 per employee.

The school district also made $2,303,774 in retirement contributions on their behalf, which averages out to $8,860 per employee.

With everything added up, the average compensation for a Sandusky educator in 2015-16 was $85,874.

The person ultimately responsible for the district’s performance – Superintendent Eugene Sanders – also made out quite well in 2015-16. He was paid $187,276 in base salary and $13,861 in benefits.

The school district also made a whopping $53,729 pension contribution on his behalf.

That means Sanders’ total compensation for 2015-16 was at least $254,866.

The school’s academic performance is what it is. The educators and superintendent make what they make.

It’s up to the citizens of Sandusky to decide if this situation is acceptable or not.
