BELLINGHAM, Wash. – There’s plenty of drama generated by a theater group at Bellingham High School in Washington – and not of the variety imagined by Shakespeare or even Eugene O’Neill.

Members of the drama club transformed their annual awards ceremony into an obscene spectacle complete with jokes about pedophilic priests and sex-toy prizes.

The incident came to light when an offended parent notified a local media outlet. The mother chooses to remain anonymous until her unidentified daughter graduates this spring.

Attending with her younger daughter, the mother described the onstage antics of Bellingham drama teacher Teri Grimes in an email to KOMO News: “I sat there with my mouth open in shock and the final straw was when a joke was told on stage about a teacher, a lawyer and a priest on a plane. The plane was going down and the teacher says we have to save the children. The attorney says ‘[sexual expletive deleted] the children!’ and the priest says ‘OOOOH…Do we have time for that?’”

Just as offensive, however, were prizes given to some of the students, including a sex toy awarded to the drama club’s “horniest stud.” Another award was given to the club’s “horniest girl.”

“WE need to get the word out there that THIS is the kind of TRASH that is being taught in our schools. I am so shocked right now I am in tears,” wrote the mother in the KOMO email.

In response to the subsequent public outcry, the teacher issued the following statement: “I deeply apologize for some very inappropriate comments and actions made during our drama students’ end-of-the-year awards ceremony. This is not representative of our students who take such great pride in their school and respect one another. Much of the evening was a great celebration of their work. However, as a teacher and the club’s leader, I take full responsibility and am extremely sorry.”

Left out of Grimes’ statement, however, is admission of her own responsibility for establishing the tone of the event through her own use of obscenities and offensive attempts at humor.

KOMO reports: “The district says the school principal held a meeting with drama students and Grimes that was very productive. A spokesperson says everybody involved expressed sincere apologies and regret.

“Neither Grimes nor the students face any discipline at this time. However, district officials are still evaluating the incident.”

And this: “The mother who brought the complaint says she’s satisfied with how the district has dealt with the matter. She believes it will help ensure student award ceremonies never go down that road again.”

Perhaps the most amazing aspect of this ordeal – aside from the lack of discipline for Grimes and her students – is that only one parent was offended enough to report the salacious nature of the event to the press.
