NEW YORK – Rhonda (Randi) Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, is a master of clouding the issues.

At times she lends lips service to ideas like increasing teacher professionalism and accountability, yet continues to defend a traditional system that includes job protections for incompetent or abusive teachers.

Somehow Weingarten gets away with her double-talk. Most media observers refuse to hold her responsible for her contradictions, or press her about the obvious damage her union and others have done to the American education system.

But the Center for Union Facts is not among those tiptoeing around the truth. The non-profit organization has posted a massive billboard on 42nd Street in New York City, near Times Square, identifying Weingarten as a leading culprit in the decline of American education, according to LaborPains.org.

“Who’s to blame for kids who can’t count or read?” the billboard says. “Ask Randi Weingarten and the teachers union.”

Richard Berman, executive director of the Center for Union Facts, issued the following statement regarding the billboard:

“Randi Weingarten and the teacher unions have for decades now placed their interests before those of America’s children, and the effects are on full display. Children in the United States continue falling further behind their international peers in the critical subjects of math, reading, and science, a trend that will continue without fundamental reform.

“Weingarten and the AFT have plagued America’s schools long enough. It’s time for them to go.”
