DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – A Tea Party group is raising awareness among taxpayers about the “ridiculous” salaries being paid to members of Georgia’s Douglas County school board, especially in a time of increased property taxes and school budget cuts.

According to calculations from the Douglas County Tea Party, the average local school board member earns $267 an hour.

The Tea Party-ers arrive at that amount by dividing the minimum board annual salary – $19,240 – “by 72 hours, which assumes members attend two meetings a month at three hours a meeting,” reports DouglasCountySentinel.com.

The board is the second-highest paid school governing body in the state, according to the news site.

Tea Party Chair Beth Martinez calls those salaries “a ridiculous amount of money,” and believes Douglas County board members’ earnings should be brought in line with similar-sized school districts throughout the state.

Annual school board pay in comparable districts ranges from $2,400 to $7,200, according to DouglasCountySentinel.com.

Martinez and her fellow Tea Party activists aren’t stopping with their public information campaign. On Monday night they plan ask board members to pass a resolution requesting that state lawmakers “return control of their salaries back to the county,” the new site reports.

A 2002 law links board members’ pay to the earnings of a superior court judge.

Tea Party representatives will also ask board members to propose a new, scaled-down salary plan to replace the current one.

Martinez told the news site that residents didn’t know about the out-of-whack salaries.

“So we set out to educate people and people were not happy with what they found out,” she said.
