WAYNESBORO, Ga. – A Georgia high school is dealing with its second case of educator sexual misconduct with students in less than a week after a teacher was allegedly caught “sexting” a student.

The most recent episode involves Debra Renae Tanksley, a 2012 Teacher of the Year, who was arrested for allegedly sending inappropriate sexual text messages to a student at Burke County High School, though authorities haven’t described the content of the messages, the New York Daily News reports.

Tanksley was charged last Wednesday with criminal attempt of sexual assault and electronically furnishing obscene materials to minors, according to the news site.

The 37-year-old had previously co-taught advanced placement Literature and Mythology with colleague Ashley Ashe, 25, who was arrested less than a week before Tanksley for her alleged transgressions with a student, WJBF 6 television station reports.

“I’m shocked,” Kandice Goddard, a 2012 Burke County High School alumna, told the news station. “I’m having a hard time believing they did it.”

Though details are scarce, authorities allege Tanksley allegedly sent sexually inappropriate text messages to a student in one of her classes, and raised the victim’s grade. Tanksley has taught in the district for seven years, school officials said.

Ashe, who is married, was arrested and charged with aggravated child molestation on May 6 after she allegedly admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student, the Daily News reports.

She allegedly confessed to having a sexual encounter with the boy in February and kissing him before school, according to the news site.

Both teachers were put on administrative leave, according to Superintendent Rudy Falana, though it’s unclear whether they are receiving pay during their criminal proceedings.
