HOLLAND, Mich. – Two years ago, the West Ottawa school district fired veteran teacher Susan Brennan on charges that she wasn’t getting the job done in the classroom.

School officials cited Brennan’s chronic tardiness, cell phone use during class, failure to turn in lesson plans, and use of a student to help carry out her teaching duties as reasons for her termination, according to the Huffington Post.

Brennan says those charges were trumped up, and that school officials really fired her because she once worked as a stripper.

That’s the basis of Brennan’s lawsuit against the Michigan school district, which was filed this week.

In her lawsuit, Brennan alleges that while the officials punished her for using a cell phone during class, they did not punish male employees for the same infraction.

Brennan, who suffers from a disability that affects her organizational skills, also claims that her firing violated the Americans with Disabilities Act.

But it’s Brennan’s work as stripper that’s drawing interest in this story. Unfortunately, the details are murky.

The Huffington Post reports that Brennan’s dancing stint occurred in 2006 “while she was on medical leave of absence from the school.”

A local newspaper has reported that Brennan worked an exotic dancer during her summer break in 2006.

Adding to the confusion is Brennan’s own lawsuit.

“The lawsuit states that in December 2006, her ex-husband’s girlfriend called the district and said Brennan, mother of three, had worked as a stripper before becoming a teacher (in 2000),” reports the Huffington Post, citing a Press report. (emphasis added)

Did Brennan strip for only a few months in order to stave off personal bankruptcy (as she claims), or was exotic dancing a part of her life during her teaching career?

The media can’t figure this out, and the district refuses to discuss the matter for legal reasons.

Parents and taxpayers are left to conclude that Brennan’s career with the West Ottawa district was marked by drama and unprofessional behavior that has no place in the classroom. Enough said, as far as we’re concerned.
