TALLAHASSEE – Broward County schools are seeking a resource officer to protect every school, but a state lawmaker is seeking a tax increase to pay for it.

It apparently is not a big enough issue to divert existing resources or utilize current revenue more efficiently.

From NewsRadio WIOD:

Just six weeks after the Sandy Hook massacre major changes could be on tap in Broward where the school board votes to put resource officers in every school.

The plan now heads to Tallahassee after getting the A -OK from local lawmakers.

Sharon Glickman of the Broward Teachers Union says they’re on board.

Florida state senator Eleanor Sobel wants a new property tax to pay for resource officers in every school.

Critics say the added protection isn’t needed since most kids are nabbed for minor infractions.

If approved at the state level, the idea would likely be voted as a referendum next year.
