New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is waging a war against climate change by removing meat from the menu at all 1,800 of the city’s schools.

De Blasio signed off on expanding a Meatless Mondays campaign districtwide after a pilot program at 15 Brooklyn schools allegedly proved popular with students. The campaign is based on the premise that eating less meat reduces the environmental impact on the planet, and somehow makes for a more nutritious meal.

It also aligns with radical socialist policies outlined in a Green New Deal designed to take drastic measures to thwart the impending doom of climate change. Climate alarmists contend there’s only about a decade left to act before the planet spirals out of control, and de Blasio is doing his part by withholding meat from 1.1 million students once a week.

“Cutting back on meat a little will improve New Yorkers’ health and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” de Blasio said. “We’re expanding Meatless Mondays to all public schools to keep our lunch and planet green for generations to come.”

De Blasio made the announcement at PS 130 The Parkside, where he produced a Twitter PSA about how important the initiative is to fight global warming. Also, Meatless Mondays are really, really healthy, he said, and it’s the right thing to do, because it’s basically the best idea ever.

“I’m here at the cafeteria at PS 130 here in Brooklyn with these amazing kids. I was spending time with fourth-graders, seventh-graders, and they are passionate about wanting to make sure they are healthy and the Earth is healthy,” de Blasio said in the video.

“And they believe in Meatless Mondays. And I want you to know why we’re going to do it for the whole school system. Because we need our kids to be healthy. And a more balanced diet, more vegetables, more fruits, more meatless options are good for everyone. Good for the Earth, too,” he said.

“We know that we’re going to have to do a lot to fight global warming,” de Blasio said. “And that includes looking at how our food is produced and choosing some other options, striking a better balance. That’s what this is all about.”

The Twitter video didn’t feature any actual students clamoring for meatless options, so viewers will have to take de Blasio’s word for it that they’re on board with Meatless Mondays. Regardless, the program will undoubtedly reach more of them than in the past.

De Blasio launched a school breakfast and lunch free for all in 2017 that now serves 150 million “free” meals to students each year, courtesy of taxpayers.

The high-profile launch of the districtwide Meatless Monday campaign comes as the mayor is reportedly mulling a possible run for president in 2020. Several Democratic candidates are campaigning on climate change and support for the Green New Deal, and de Blasio’s Monday announcement keeps him in the conversation.

Sid Lerner, founder of the Meatless Monday Movement, heaped praise on de Blasio for courageous leadership in saving the planet.

“The announcement that Mayor de Blasio has expanded Meatless Monday to all New York City public schools marks a major milestone. Through this united effort, New York City’s schools take a leadership role in getting our children on a healthier track, as well as making a positive impact on our environment,” he said.

The Meatless Mondays don’t officially start until September, but a few schools are already taking it to the next level.

CBS New York reports four schools in the city are now fully vegetarian all five days a week.

The shift toward veganism is a component of a Green New Deal introduced in Congress by New York freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and embraced by many Democrats, including all leading candidates for president in 2020.

The plan’s call for a shift away from meat is bundled together with a variety of other radical socialist policies, including government funded college and healthcare, rebuilding every structure in America to maximize energy efficiency, and the elimination of fossil fuels.

The GND is backed by a coalition of far-left groups including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which is now calling on Democrats supporting the plan to become vegans themselves and “make dismantling the meat, egg, and dairy industries a top priority,” The Daily Caller reports.
