SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Chicago Teachers Union boss Karen Lewis’ husband is telling her no, but her union body … her very large union body, is telling her yes.

That’s the latest development from Lewis’ visit to Springfield this week where she rallied union members  in advance of a looming pension fight in the Illinois legislature, the Chicago Sun Times reports.

“… (L)oud chants of ‘Run for Mayor!’ filled the Capitol rotunda, where unionized city workers gathered to hear her speak,” the newspaper reports.

Yet despite her constant criticisms of current Mayor Rahm Emanuel over pension reform, school closings, teacher pay, and just about everything else, Lewis said she doesn’t plan on challenging Emanuel for re-election in 2015.

Why not?

“My husband has said ‘no,’” Lewis told the media after the event.

“I have a job that I was elected to. I am not a politician. I clearly am not a politician,” she said.

“When one reporter pointed out that Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner takes pride in saying he, too, isn’t a politician, Lewis cracked, ‘But I’m not egotistical or rich,’” according to the Sun Times.

Of course, like much of what Lewis says, her comments aren’t exactly accurate.

Lewis rakes in at least $157,000 in reportable compensation, according to the CTU’s 2011 990 tax form. Other records show Lewis earned $71,000 for half of a year’s work in 2010, as well as $64,000 in 2011 in separate compensation from the Illinois Federation of Teachers, according to TownHall.com.

CTU honchos also get a $1,500 per month expense account, $7,000 per year car allowance, 85 percent of car insurance and expenses paid with union dues, a parking allowance, a cell phone allowance, paid life insurance, and a bonus week’s worth of pay, TownHall reports.

In other words, John Lewis, Karen’s husband, is a smart man.

By the looks of things, the CTU boss would stand to lose a lot of income and special perks if she became a public servant.
