NAPLES, Fla. – Parents were lining up to pull their kids out of Palmetto Ridge High School on Monday after students were greeted with eerie messages spray-painted in a courtyard over the Thanksgiving break.

“You are detached from your creator … time to come home children,” one message read.

“My children you R blindly being misled, tis time to wake from your slumber …” read another, scrawled in black spray-paint high on a building overlooking the school courtyard.

Yet another on a sidewalk read “Release My Children,” the Naples Daily News reports.

School officials condemned the “vandalism by graffiti” in a message posted to Twitter at 7:15 a.m. Monday, and vowed to “do everything to ensure safety and catch those responsible.”

District officials called the Collier County Sheriff’s Office to investigate and released a formal statement a few hours later.

“The school was targeted in 6 different locations throughout the courtyard,” the statement read. “In response to this criminal act, the school administration, Collier County District officials and the Collier County Sheriff Office (sic) are working together to identify the responsible parties, clean and repaint school walls, and ensure safety and security of our students and staff.”

The statement said the incident occurred “in the middle of the night” Sunday. District spokesman Greg Turchetta told the Naples Daily News some of the messages appeared “right next to” security cameras.

Turchetta told Fox 4 the graffiti was discovered early Monday morning.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Michelle Batten said the messages contained no explicit threats, and officers are now working with school officials to review the surveillance video to identify the suspects.

Annette Kniola, mother of a Palmetto Ridge junior and administrator of “The Estates Community” Facebook page, posted images of the vandalism that prompted many parents to pull their kids out of school for the day.

“That feed has gone bonkers. My phone just keeps buzzing,” Kniola told the News.

“They were lined up taking their kids out,” she said. “They don’t want to take any chances.”

Kniola contends the school dean told her “three boys were caught on camera” who “do not go to that school,” according to the News.

“To me it’s a threat. It looks like a threat,” she told NBC 2. “But you can write anything and nothing will happen so hopefully nothing will happen.”

Some students told the news site they fled the school in fear on Monday.

“It made me feel just scared for my life, honestly,” Alexis Cummings said. “As soon as I saw it I called my mom and told her I was scared for my safety and for the safety of everyone else.”

The news site reports that dozens of students left in the middle of the day and didn’t come back.

“I think that someone actually took the time to plan this and something will be coming after this,” Cummings said.
