MULBERRY, Fla. – A Florida high school teacher faces pornography charges after students allege he left his iPhone on his desk with gay porn on it in plain view.

Several students reported last Wednesday that Mulberry High School teacher Vadi Valez-Gonzalez, 47, was viewing gay male pornography on his phone in class when they approached the teacher to ask a question, the Bradenton Herald reports.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said students in the ninth-grade intensive reading class told police Valez-Gonzalez’s iPhone was sitting on his desk in plain view with a slideshow of images including a full body shot of a naked adult male, as well as two males engaged in sex.

“It’s like are you kidding me?” Sheriff Grady Judd told the news site. “You showed this pornography to ninth grade children, two girls and two guys, are you kidding me?”

The Ledger reports a female student approached the teacher to ask a question about an assignment around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday and “she could not believe what she saw,” according to the police report.

That student then returned to the Valez-Gonzalez’s desk and pretended to throw something in the garbage while she secretly recorded the images with her cell phone and forwarded the evidence to police.

“Three other students also saw pornographic images of men on Valez-Gonzalez’s iPhone, so they reported it. When Sheriff’s Office detectives obtained a search warrant for Valez-Gonzalez’s phone, they found that he viewed a male pornography website 384 times between Sept. 30 and Oct. 13 — an average of about 27 times each day, according to the report” cited by the Ledger.

Police contend Valez-Gonzalez visited gay porn sites on at least two occasions while he was supposed to be teaching students. Police allege the teacher also bookmarked nearly a dozen porn sites on the phone.

School officials place Valez-Gonzalez on leave Friday, and he was arrested yesterday on four counts of showing obscene material to minors, according to ABC News.

He was also charged with four counts of using a two-way communication device to commit a felony. All of the 22 students in the reading class were under 18 years old.

“It’s not like he was even hiding it,” Judd told the Ledger. “He knew exactly what he was doing.”

Judd also commended the student for taking action.

“School teachers are there to teach children what’s right, but the ninth-grade student taught the teacher what was right by videotaping the nasty pornographic video displayed in her sight,” he said.

Judd said the girl who uncovered the porn also convinced her classmates to verify what she saw to provide multiple witnesses.

“I was totally impressed,” he said. “She showed her investigative prowess.”
