The incident took place at West Rowan Middle School in Salisbury.

The unidentified male 14-year-old student faces juvenile charges of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon on school property, going armed to the terror of the public and communicating threats, Rowan County deputies tell WXII.

The 8th grade student was subdued after being hit three times by a school resource officer’s baton. He was then taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The officer noticed something was wrong when he saw “screaming kids running from the cafeteria.”

The student was allegedly wearing the clown mask seen above.

He initially refused to drop his knife before being struck.

WHIO reports the student was struck on the forearm, causing him to drop the knife.

After his arrest, police allegedly found a 10-inch knife in his book bag.

Deputies say the school was never locked down because the threat was “quickly eliminated.”

No one was hurt.

The student, described as a “white male,” was to be evaluated by mental health personnel after some of the statements he made to the officer and school staff.

“Officials have not said what those statements were or what type of treatment the boy may require,” according to WBTV.
