HOWELL, N.J. – Police are investigating the circumstances around a fight between parents and referees in the lock room following a New Jersey high school hockey game that sent two men to the hospital.

iceworldPolice and school officials are tight-lipped about what occurred following a boy’s hockey game between Manalapan and Howell high schools at the Howell Ice World Saturday, but a police statement contends four men were left with “minor visible injuries (red marks, facial bruising, bloodshot eyes, bruised hand) and complaints of pain,” NJ.com reports.

“Two of the involved subjects refused medical attention and the other two subjects were transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center,” Howell Police Sgt. Scott Revilak wrote in the statement, according to USA Today.

Revilak revealed only that “a dispute started during the game” and once it concluded “one parent approached two referees regarding the dispute.

“At this time a physical altercation began and a (fourth) subject became involved in the altercation,” he wrote.

Referees involved in the fight would not discuss specifics about what transpired, citing the ongoing police investigation.

Referee Dan Brown told NJ.com he was taken with the other referee to the hospital for injuries, after they “were assaulted in (their) locker room.”

Brown said he sustained “a bump on my head and all kinds of bruises on my shoulders and my back,” while his partner hurt his knee.

It’s unclear exactly what sparked the dispute, though Manalapan captain Rob Colligan was hauled away from the game to the hospital after he was checked from behind and crashed head first into the side of the rink, Manalapan coach Brad Gardner said.

Colligan was knocked unconscious in the incident, but doctors later diagnosed his injury as a neck sprain and he’s expected to return, USA Today reports.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie, with several players removed for misconduct and tensions high between players, parents and referees, Gardner told the news site.

“That was pretty much it out of the norm,” he told NJ.com. “you know, there was a couple penalties, but nothing that I saw of crazy significance.

“It was a normal high school hockey game until it was over, I guess,” he said.

Several folks seemed to feel sorry for the student of the parent involved in the post-game altercation.

“The children of those parents have no chance at becoming decent citizens,” Ted Crilley posted to NJ.com. “Their parent’s example will perpetuate the aggressive NJ attitude.  They will be horrible people just like their mom and dad.”

“Loser parents. Goes to show you money can’t buy brains,” endpwage wrote. “I am sure your kids are proud of you.”

“Hope the parents involved are placed in exile for all school-related events involving their child,” Spore added. “There is no room for this behavior. It’s a freaking game!”
